About The Run for Homes

Hello! I’m Zach, a Philadelphia runner and Habitat for Humanity worker and supporter. On October 13, 2013, I will voluntarily (and I hope swiftly) run 26.2 miles through the streets of the Windy City during the Chicago Marathon. If all goes well, this will be my third successfully completed marathon. This time will be a little different though, as I’m using the run as a way to raise funds for and bring awareness to the work done by Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia.  Every day in Philadelphia, one in four families is forced to decide between paying for rent or food, medical bills or transportation to work.  This high cost burden forces families to make tough decisions daily that have a lasting negative impact on their lives, their children, and their communities. But the great news is we can do something about it! I really do believe strongly in our model of partner families and community volunteers working together. It works. In the less than a year that I’ve been working at Habitat, I’ve seen people’s lives changed for the better. I’ve seen neighborhoods revitalized. I’ve seen empty plots of land transformed into homes for hard working families. I drank the Kool-Aid, and I can’t put the pitcher down.

So, here’s the deal: I’m paying for my own transportation to Chicago, for housing, and for the race entry fees. That means every cent of any amount of money that you donate will go directly towards the eradication of poverty housing in Philadelphia. Whoa. At this point you are probably saying to yourself, "Wow, this is AMAZING. I want to help. Also, Zach is so handsome in running attire!" Ok, you probably didn't say that last part, but I know you want to help! And now, you are probably asking yourself, "How much can I donate?!?” No donation is too small. Feel free to donate in multiples of $25, a dollar for every mile I run, and I will throw in the last 1.2 miles for free! My goal is to raise $2,000, and every little bit helps. Thank you so much for helping me combine my passions for running and for helping others. Your generous support will put a smile on my face, fill my heart with love, and inspire me to train until my thighs can crack walnuts. But most importantly, you’ll be helping make Philadelphia (and the world) a better, more hopeful place.
