Help us 'Raise the Roof' for a family in Asheville! We're fundraising to pay for the cost of the Stynka family's new roof.
Hurray! We did it! The funds are raised and the roof is up—just in time for April showers that are, no doubt, in our near future. We are so appreciative of the support from those who donated, shared, and cheered us on in this campaign. And, a BIG thank you goes to our fundraisers, women from Asheville Area Habitat’s Women Build Advocacy Team. Thanks to you, Andrei and Rodika Stynka are well on their way to reaching their dream of a safe, affordable, and dry home for their family. Way to go!
Yesterday the roof trusses were hoisted to the top of the 2014 Women Build House!
Thanks to our many supporters and donors, this roof is 100% funded! With help from a large crane, women from Ramapo College of New Jersey were onsite along with our faithful core volunteers and our fearless construction supervisor, Robin, to guide the trusses to their position on top of the walls. Next up, they will set the trusses one by one and install the roof decking. By the time “April showers” are here, this house will be all buttoned up and ready for the elements.
Take a look at our Flickr album for a full set of pictures of the big event. Please share the news on social media with your friends and family. And, be proud of yourselves for making this happen! Sooner than later the Stynka family will be calling this house home.
PS- We still have one week left in the Raise the Roof Campaign! Although we reached our goal early and the roof is paid for, the entire house is not yet fully funded. All donations to this campaign are earmarked for this house, and every little bit helps!
YAY! We did it! Thanks to our wonderful supporters and donors, we've surpassed our goal of $4,000 to pay for the roof on the Women Build home! And, not a minute too soon--the roof trusses will be raised by a big crane to the top of the walls next Wednesday. Stay tuned for pictures!
But, we're not finished yet--we have reached our monetary goal, but the campaign is scheduled to last until March 27th. We now have the roof covered, but the complete house is still not fully sponsored and every little bit counts. So, please consider spreading the word for us by sharing a link to our campaign page on facebook, twitter, or email, and let's see what we can do together for Rodika, Andrei, and their two sweet children!
Women Build is officially under way with the official raising of the first wall of the Stynka family’s home!
This year’s build theme is "Recipes" and the WomBATS (Women Build Advocacy Team) did an excellent job during the wall-raising event program sharing recipes for favorite foods, as well as sharing the “recipe” for a Habitat Women Build house, with each WomBAT speaking briefly about each of the following ingredients:
- Know How
The WomBATs also shared the recipes for the food they brought for the event, which turned out to be a wonderful smorgasbord of sweets, savories and family favorites. After the presentation, the whole crowd made their way up onto the house and hoisted the wall into place and capped it off with the traditional wall-signing, covering the wall with colorful and heartfelt good wishes, congratulations and joyful quips.
We're so close to our goal of $4,000 for the roof...we don't have much time before it goes up, so please donate if you can, if you haven't already! No amount is too small.

Construction on the Women Build house began this week! Volunteers are building the decking for the floor in preparation for the Wall Raising ceremony next Tuesday (at 3:00 at the jobsite in Swannanoa. Join us! GPS: 410 Dennis Street). This sets in motion an unstoppable train of building! Teams of women—some from colleges across the country and most from right here in Asheville—will get to work to build the Stynka family’s home. We’ve reached half of our goal to pay for the cost of their roof—hurry, there’s not much time left to raise the rest! Thanks for your support!
Yesterday Rodika and Andrei Stynka had their official orientation at Asheville Area Habitat. They learned all about what it means to be a Habitat partner family.
To summarize their five hours of orientation, the Stynkas:
• Learned the details of Habitat homeownership
• Met our staff as they toured the office, ReStore, and jobsite
• Learned all about what is involved in their required 400 hours of sweat equity, such as homeowner education classes, volunteering on the jobsite and in the ReStore, attending Habitat events, etc
• Were briefed by Betsy Warren, Habitat’s sponsorship coordinator, on what Women Build is all about and what it means to be the WB partner family. And, of course, she let them know how lucky they are to have such a wonderful sponsor!
Now that they are officially prepared, let the fun begin! Join us for their wall raising on March 4th at 3:00pm at the site in Swannanoa and take a minute to chat with Rodika and Andrei if you can. They are a wonderful couple and are so very excited about getting to work on their new house!
The kids from our most recent Habitat neighborhood, Carney Place, had a ball on their latest "snow day". Asheville has been essentially shut down from a major snowfall, but the kids in this Habitat neighborhood have plenty of friends to play with--their neighbors! We're building a similar neighborhood in Swannanoa where the Stynka family's future home will be. Help us build a place where happy memories are made!
Today is Day 1 of our 45 day campaign to raise $4,000 for a roof on the Women Build 2014 house! We met the partner family, Rodika and Andrei Stynka and their two boys, at the jobsite last week to take some pictures and show them the foundation to their future house. They are so excited! Right now they are living with family in an overcrowded situation...Rodika cooks for 14 people every day. And that's every meal! Hard to imagine! Help us to put a roof over their heads so they can have a home of their own.
Here at Asheville Area Habitat we're anxiously awaiting the launch of our Raise the Roof campaign for this year's Women Build family. We're training our leadership team this week to be amazing ambassadors and fundraisers so we can meet our goal of raising $4,000!
