About Me

I am currently 58 years old and am a business owner.  Our business does all the compliance work for Company Retirement Plans such as 401(k) plans.  I have two grown daughters and 6 grandchildren ranging from 6 months to 16 years old.

Besides working, I make quilts.  I love all parts of making a quilt, reading patterns, picking materials, and putting them together.  I usually the give them away, which I also enjoy doing.  I also like to read and be outdoors biking or hiking.

I'm looking forward to working and learning at my first Habitat Global Village build this year.  I hope to do at least one or more each year.

Our team will join teams from Canada, Japan and other US teams to form a united team volunteers.  We will work for 10 consecutive days to provide homes for 10 families in an area near Kona     We welcome your prayers, good wishes and especially your financial support for this ambitious undertaking.   But, you may ask;  “Why Hawaii?  Is there really a need for housing in Hawaii?”  As it turns out, yes.

Homelessness in Hawaii remains a reality for a considerable number of individuals and families.  The number of homeless has been increasing at a rate of 6% per year. The median house price in West Hawaii is $275,000, which is not affordable to most of the local workforce.  In the most rural areas, almost 20% of the dwellings listed by the Community Development Corporation consist of tents, yurts, lava tubes and cargo containers.

The mission of Habitat West Hawaii is to empower families and build community and hope through home ownership.  Granted affiliation with Habitat for Humanity International in 2002, our small affiliate has just completed our 10th house. We are ramping up to increase our capacity – growing from building 3-4 homes per year to building 10 or more homes every year, and providing the support services to help our families become successful homeowners.

Global Village is Habitat for Humanity’s international volunteer program. Teams travel to over 40 countries to work alongside communities, build housing solutions, and experience local culture. Our goal is to change the lives of the people we serve, as well as the lives of the volunteers.

About Habitat for Humanity International

Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity has grown from a grassroots effort that began on a community farm in southern Georgia in 1976 to a global nonprofit housing organization in nearly 1,400 communities across the U.S. and in over 70 countries. People partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.
