About Me

Hello Friends and Family! Welcome to my Global Village trip page! This June I will be traveling to Sri Lanka for two weeks to work as a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, building houses alongside people who need a decent, affordable place to live. I will be traveling with a group of graduate students and alumni of the College Student Services Administration (CSSA) program at Oregon State University. We will be doing some hands on volunteer work as well as learning how to lead global service-learning trips for other students in the future!   For those of you who are unfamiliar with the CSSA program, it is a Master's of Education program and graduates can work in the student affairs field in positions such as academic advising, residential life, admissions, new student orientation, civic engagement, and many other areas!   As an internship for my program, several cohort members as well as a member of our faculty and I will be traveling to Sri Lanka with Habitat for Humanity.  This will be a great opportunity to learn about how to lead large-scale trips like this with students at the universities with which we will work.  It is also a great way for us as graduate students and new professionals to broaden our worldview and help out an amazing organization like Habitat for Humanity.    Our two week trip to Sri Lanka will begin June 22 and continue through July 7. To help subsidize the cost of this trip I have set up this profile for family, friends, and supporters to donate.  My goal for the trip is to raise $1,500 which will cover my living expenses (food, shelter, transportation, and travelers insurance) while on the trip.  A portion of the money also goes towards helping the community purchase building supplies for our project.      Our group is also actively seeking community partners to host fundraising nights, with a portion of their proceeds going to our cause. I will keep this site updated with opportunities to enjoy a great meal while helping out our cause.   Read on to learn more about my trip, Habitat's work and how you can help.

About Our Team

Team Goal: $10,000

Welcome to our team information and fundraising page!   This coming June, we're headed to Matale, Sri Lanka to sling mud, carry bricks, mix cement, and provide any physical labor necessary to help deserving families realize their dreams of living in safe and decent homes. In the meantime, we continue to plan the trip, fundraise on behalf of the community we will be serving, study the concept of service-learning, and prepare for our immersion in Sri Lankan culture and the community of Matale.   We're looking forward to rolling-up our sleeves, digging-in, and helping make home-ownership a reality for families in need. We ask that you consider joining our team as a Team Member (if you're interested in coming on the trip contact our Team Leader, Dave Kovac), a Team Supporter (by making a donation to help support our work), or Both!

About Sri Lanka:

This island country southeast of India is known for its natural tropical beauty. It has made steady progress since the opening of its economy in 1977, but poor families have seen few of the benefits. Development efforts have been hampered by three decades of civil war. Meanwhile, the country is still rebuilding from the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

More than 4 million Sri Lankans are estimated to live below the poverty line, with about half a million of them residing in slums and shanties. Habitat for Humanity began operating in Sri Lanka in 1994, and today a series of Habitat Resource Centers support local projects. Habitat is one of the country’s largest homebuilders after the government.

We invite you to join our Global Village team in partnering with these families in need to help build safe, affordable, decent homes. There are many ways to be a part of this project. You can donate to an individual team member by clicking on their photo to the left.  You can also share this cause with people in your network. By clicking on the “Share” buttons at the upper right of this page, you can share a link and information about this page on Facebook, Twitter, Blogger, and many other social media sites. You can also use the email tool to invite others to join in partnering with families in need.

Visit this page often. We will post updates, add video and photos, and keep you informed about our progress in Matale, Sri Lanka. Working together, we can create positive change. Thank you for becoming a part of the Global Village experience!
