About Our Team
La Gallina is a small community within the Nicaraguan city of San Rafael del Sur. It is a community focused on agriculture, especially sugarcane. Unfortunately, La Gallina’s residents also know the pain of poverty.
More than 95 percent of the homes in La Gallina have dirt floors, with many walls constructed of rapidly deteriorating materials such as plastic, metal sheets and warping wood. Homes in La Gallina have no plumbing or drinking water, either. People draw water from wells along the roads, and most of the community’s latrines are falling apart.
Families here work hard to improve their living situation, but with a per capita income of around $1 a day, it’s a challenge many families can’t overcome on their own.
About Women Build:
Women Build participants believe that decent, affordable housing is not a feminist issue. It is a quality of life and basic human dignity issue facing families everywhere. Women Build brings together women from all walks of life to address in a concrete way the housing crisis facing millions across the globe. Women Build is not about excluding men. It is about including women and opening new doors of opportunity. Men are often involved in our training programs and build projects, and are absolutely welcome to join this Global Village team.
We invite you to join our Global Village team in partnering with these families in need to help build safe, affordable, decent homes. There are many ways to be a part of this project. You can donate to an individual team member by clicking on their photo to the left. You can also share this cause with people in your network. By clicking on the “Share” buttons at the upper right of this page, you can share a link and information about this page on Facebook, Twitter, Blogger, and many other social media sites. You can also use the email tool to invite others to join in partnering with families in need.
Visit this page often. We will post updates, add video and photos, and keep you informed about our progress in La Gallina. Working together, we can create positive change. Thank you for becoming a part of the Global Village experience!
